For those who want to grow their hair long, there seems to be a never ending parade of products which profess to make hair grow faster, stronger, thicker, and longer. While some of these products may supplement good hair habits, treating your hair right is the most important aspect of growing it long. Waist-length hair usually has ends which are at least five, and sometimes seven years old. No product available can truly undo damage to your hair, so treating your hair well is an absolute necessity.

The first stage is to trim any and all damaged hair off. Although this obviously results in shorter hair for a period of time, it’s necessary because split ends will only travel up any individual damaged hair, and putting off trimming means that when it eventually must be done, more will have to be cut off. To have healthy long hair, you must start with healthy short(er) hair.

From this point on, it’s all about avoiding damage. Minimize heat styling, and do not expose hair to the harsh ingredients of bleaches, colors, and perms. If you swim in chlorinated water or salt water, thoroughly rinse hair with plain water immediately after swimming before shampooing. And avoid using hair accessories that tear hair or put stress on roots.
